Unlike Mount Kenya's true summit peaks, every standard Kilimanjaro route to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) is a walking trail rather than a technical climb. That makes it genuinely achievable for fit trekkers without prior mountaineering experience - but it should not be underestimated, given the altitude involved.
Machame ('Whiskey Route') is the most popular for its varied scenery and reasonable acclimatisation profile, especially over 7-8 days. Lemosho approaches from the west and is considered one of the more scenic, slightly less crowded options. Marangu ('Coca-Cola Route') is the only route with hut accommodation instead of camping, and is typically climbed faster - which some argue reduces acclimatisation time. Rongai approaches from the quieter northern side, near the Kenyan border.
Longer itineraries (7-8 days on Machame or Lemosho, for example) give your body more time to acclimatise to altitude, which is widely understood to improve both comfort and the likelihood of a successful, enjoyable summit compared with faster 5-6 day versions of the same routes.
Nearly every route summits via a pre-midnight departure from a high camp, climbing through the night in the cold and dark to reach the crater rim around sunrise, then continuing to Uhuru Peak itself before descending - all told, often 10-14 hours of continuous effort on very little sleep. Mental preparation matters as much as physical fitness for this stage.
A Kilimanjaro trekking team typically includes a lead guide, assistant guides, a cook and a number of porters who carry camping equipment, food and group gear. Their working conditions - fair pay, appropriate cold-weather gear, sensible load limits - are worth asking your operator about directly, since porter welfare varies significantly between companies.
