Travel Insurance for a Kenya or Tanzania Safari

Practical Information · Updated 1 March 2026

Lioness and cubs, a reminder of the remote settings safari insurance should cover

We require it, but we don't sell it

We ask every traveller to have their own travel insurance in place, but we're not an insurance provider and won't recommend a specific company - shop around and compare policies from providers who cover East African safaris specifically.

Medical evacuation cover is the one to check carefully

Many of the parks on this site are remote, hours from the nearest major hospital. Look specifically for a policy that includes emergency medical evacuation (often by light aircraft) - this is the cover that matters most on safari, more than standard trip-cancellation cover alone.

Check activity-specific exclusions

If your trip includes Mount Kenya or Kilimanjaro trekking, confirm your policy actually covers high-altitude trekking - some standard policies cap coverage at a lower altitude than these summits, or exclude mountaineering-adjacent activities entirely.

Other things worth checking

Cover for trip cancellation or curtailment, lost or delayed luggage (useful if checked bags don't make a tight connection), and pre-existing medical condition disclosure requirements, which vary by insurer.

When to buy it

Sooner rather than later - some cancellation-related benefits only apply if the policy is purchased within a certain window of your initial trip deposit, which varies by provider.
