This adds a genuinely restful component to a gorilla trekking trip. Lake Bunyonyi, a short drive from Bwindi, is dotted with small islands and free of bilharzia and crocodiles, making it a rare safe-swimming lake in the region and a calm place to unwind after the trek.

Optional canoe trips between the lake's small islands
A good balance of activity and rest
Accommodation: Mid-range lodges (upgradeable to luxury)
Vehicle: 4x4 safari vehicle
Bwindi can be visited year-round since trekking happens regardless of season, though the two drier windows (June-August and December-February) mean less mud on the trekking trails. Wetter months still offer good trekking - the terrain is simply more demanding underfoot.
